Mandraki Harbour: Base of excursion boats and hydrofoils. It was at the entrance of this harbour that the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World Stood. Now two bronze deer (the stag and the doe) stand guard on stone pillars. The Cathedral church of the Evangelismos (Annunciation), built in 1925 on the model of the Church of St John in the Old Town, which was destroyed in 1856. The Prefecture: Formerly the Italian Governor's Palace, this monument was built in a Venetian Gothic style and is ornately decorated on the outside. It was built in 1927 by Italian architect Florestano di Fausto. Town Hall Square: The location of Central Court of the Hellas Open 2002, which is ringed on all sides by historic buildings. Town Hall. This building will house most of the operations of the Hellas Open 2002. National Theatre: Built in 1937 by an unknown architect in a unique combination of International and Fascist style, it was originally called "Teatro Puccini". East Beach of Rhodes Town: Facing out into the Eastern Mediterranean, this beach is separated by a headland from the west beach, which faces into the Aegean Sea and is more open to prevailing northern winds. Ottoman Cemetery. Beyond is the Villa Cleobolus, where Lawrence Durrell lived in the 1940s and wrote Reflections on a Marine Venus. Police Headquarters Post Office: An excellent specimen of the Rennaisance Eclecticism and the "Finta Pietra" technology. Built during the first years of the Italian occupation by architect Florestano di Fausto as the Palazzo delle Poste, it is still used as a Post Office. Outside Courts of the Hellas Open 2002 Fountain, copy of the 13th Century Fontana Grande of Viterbo, Italy. Mosque of Murad Reis, named after the Turkish Admiral who was killed during the 1522 siege of Rhodes. It was fitted with a new minaret in the 1990s by the Greek Archaeological Service.
