SWISS
GET GOLD IN GREEK OPEN
Sascha Heyer and Markus Egger of Switzerland, the 2001 European Champions,
outblocked Norway's Jorre Andre Kjemperud and Vega Hoidalen to win 2-0 (21-16,
21-15) in the men's final and earn the gold medal, as the Greek Open of
the 2003 European Championship Tour wound to a close in Rethymnon, Crete.
The Swiss team gets 8,500 for their success, while
6,250 go to the Norwegians. The victory brings
Egger and Heyer to the pole position, as teams now prepare for the finals
of the Tour, which will be held in August in Alanya, Turkey.

Laciga
Brothers Win Bronze Medal in Rethymnon
Switzerland's Laciga brothers, Paul & Martin, defeated Austria's Niki
Berger and Clemens Doppler 2-0 (21-9, 21-19), to win the bronze medal in
the Greek Open of the 2003 European Championship Tour, in Rethymnon,
Crete. The Swiss, who were runners-up in last year's European
Championships, will share 4,500 for their
third-place finish in Rethymnon. The Austrians get 3,250.
The final, featuring
Switzerland's Sascha Heyer and Markus Egger v. Norway's Jorre Andre
Kjemperud and Vega Hoidalen, follows immediately.

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS
WIN GREEK OPEN
Italy's Lucilla Perrotta and Daniella Gattelli survived an attempted
comeback by the Czech Republic's Sona Dosoudilova Novakova and Eva Celbova,
to win the gold medal at the Greek Open of the 2003 European Championship
Tour, in Rethymnon, Crete. The Italians, who won the continental title
last year in Basel, Switzerland, edged the Czechs in the first set,
but were forced to a tie-break and had to rally back from 1-5 in the third
to finish the match at 2-1 (21-19, 12-21, 15-12) and earn the 8,500 prize.
The Czechs will share 6,250. This victory leaves Perrotta and Gattelli in pole position for the Final Tournament of the
season in Alanya, Turkey, next month.

Medal Goes To Switzerland
Switzerland's Nicole Benoξt and Simone Kuhn defeated Germany's Stephanie
Pohl and Okka Rau 2-0 (21-19, 21-16) to win the bronze medal of the Greek
Open of the 2003 European Championship Tour. The Swiss share
4,500 in prize money, with
3,250 going to the Germans. The final, between
Italy's Lucilla Perrotta / Daniela Gattelli and the Czech Republic's Sona
Dosoudilova Novakova and Eva Celbova follows immediately in Centre Court,
in Rethymnon, Crete.

Greek Men's Teams
Out Of Competition
Both Greek teams were eliminated from the remainder of the Greek Open of
the 2003 European Championship Tour, when they lost their last matches of
pool play at Rethymnon, Saturday morning. Andreas Gorchaniouk / Panayotis
Mourtzios fell to Switzerland's Laciga brothers 0-2 (13-21, 19-21) and
Pavlos Beligratis / Thanassis Michalopoulos lost to France's Canet / Hamel
also 0-2 (15-21, 15-21). Gorchaniouk and Mourtzios ranked third in their
pool, but failed to make it to the top 16 of the competition as one of the
four best third-ranked teams. The Greek pair ranked 17th overall and share
1,000. Beligratis and Michalopoulos ranked 25th
overall and share 750.

Women's Teams
Eliminated In Round Of 16
Vasso Karadassiou and Efi Sfyri blew a 1-0 lead over Germany's Ahmann /
Vollmer, to lose 1-2 (21-10, 14-21, 11-15), as the Round of 16 in the
Single Elimination Bracket of the Greek Open of the 2003 European
Championship Tour began in Rethymnon. The Greek team, that had been
crowned European Champions in 2001 in Jesolo, Italy, and had finished a
mere 13th last year in Basel, ranked 9th in Rethymnon, with the two
players sharing 1,500 in prize money. The second
Greek team still in the competition, also lost, as Thalia Koutroumanidouu
and Vicky Arvaniti lost in straight sets to Latvia's Minusa / Pulina 0-2
(16-21, 18-21). Koutroumanidou and Araniti also ranked 9th and share
1.500.
