Rumanians Ready To
Defend Title
Pola Kitsou and Marianna Chounta shut out Rumania's Monica Radu and Elena
Cozma to win the women's title of the 2003 Balkan Beach Volleyball
Championships, which concluded at Kalo Nero, Messenia, in the southwestern
Peloponnese. The Greek team overcame the Rumanians 2-0 (21-08, 21-16) to
earn the €2,100.00 prize (with the runners-up sharing €1,500.00). The
bronze medal also went to a Greek team, as Maria Playannakou and Mara
Lazaridou defeated Moldavia's Iulia Mardari (a 2002 Balkan Champion) and
Tatiana Liulenova 2-0 (21-12, 21-19). Playannakou and Lazaridou share €1,125.00,
with Mardari and Liulenova getting €825.00.
Rumania's Ioan Vardai and Adrian Holhos successfully defended their men's
title and were crowned Balkan beach volleyball champions for the second
year running, when they edged Greece's Spyros Karachalios and Costas
Tambouratzis 2-1 (21-19, 18-21, 16-14) at Kalo Nero. The Rumanians earn
€2,100.00 in prize money, with the Greeks taking in €1,500.00. The
men's bronze medal went to Bulgaria's Milen Stoyanov and Boris Yankov, who
edged Greece's Apostolos Armenakis and Panagiotis Mourtzios 2-0 (23-21,
22-20) to earn €1,125.00.

Rumanians Ready To
Defend Title
Rumania's Ioan Vardai and Adrian Holhos defetaed Bulgaria's Milen Stoyanov
and Boris Yankov in straight sets to qualify to the final of the 2003
Balakn Beach Volleyball Championships, at Kalo Nero, Messenia, in the
southwestern Peloponnese. The 2002 champions still need to overcome the
resistance of the home team of Spyros Karachalios and Costas Tambouratzis
(who edged fellow-Greeks Apostolos Armenakis and Panagiotis Mourtzios in
the semi-finals), in order to defend their title.
Pola
Kitsou (the 2002 National Champion of Greece), playing with Marianna
Chounta in this competition, is vying for the women's gold medal at Kalo
Nero. Kitsou and Chounta defeated compatriots Maria Playannakou and Mara Lazaridou in
three sets in the semis and now play against Rumania's Monica Radu / Elena
Cozma, who edged Moldavia's Iulia Mardari and Tatiana Liulenova, also in
three sets in the other semi-final.
The bronze medal matches will begin at
16:00 local time (13:00 GMT) and the gold medal matches at 18:00 local
time (15:00 GMT) Sunday evening in Centre Court at the resort of Kalo
Nero, on the shores of the Ionian Sea.

Competition Begins At
Kalo Nero
The 2003 Balkan Beach Volleyball Championships got underway at Kalo Nero,
Messenia, in the southwestern Peloponnese, with few surprises but under
threat of rain from an increasingly darkening sky. Full results of pool
play are now available on this website, updated immediately after the end
of each match. Pool Play concludes Saturday evening. Sunday's programme
features the semi-finals and bronze- and gold-medal matches. Sixteen teams
in each of the eight-team men's and women's Main Draws are vying for a
total of €15,000 in prize money.

Defending Champions
Expected In Kalo Nero
Rumania's Ioan Vardai and Adrian Holhos will be at Kalo Nero, Messenia, in
southwestern Peloponnese, to defend their title, at the 2003 Balkan Beach
Volleyball Championships, 2 & 3 August. Tatiana Liulenova of Moldavia, Balkan champion in 2002, has now switched partners
and will play with Iulia Mardari in an attempt to retain the title
--although this time Greece is fielding strong opposition with
international experience.
